June 7th 2007 Supercells
Same system as the previous day moving into IA and WI. The cap was not as strong as yesterday but was still questionable. The main show was going to be north into WI. Mostly it was speed shear on this setup, very little turning with height. Into WI I think there was a little more turning to the atmosphere. 75kt mid level jet, which means more very fast storm motions because this is mainly your steering height. The sly LLJ was intensifying in WI due to shortwave trough lifting newd across the region. I targeted around Iowa city at first not wanting to go into WI because of bad chase terrain. And I was kinda of hoping that the east to central part of the ww box which was a PDS tornado watch box was going to be good for intercepting the 50kt ne moving storms.Particularly dangerous situation(PDS) watches are kind of rare and normally have a 90% prog for tornadoes. LOL not on this chase day. Driving south from cedar rapids to Iowa city, I encountered the first of many training supercells. It was basically a squall line of supercells but training over the same area.
The pic below was the second supercell I encountered on the drive south to Iowa city. As you can see I was a little close LOL. I had to core punch to get through to the inflow side and came out of the rain curtain and was like hello. Didnt have much opportunity to shoot pics so had to grab one from out the back window. Still kind of inexperienced at chasing obviously.
One of the better looking sups of the day on radar and out the window. Had a nice RFD cut good lowering and then just crapped out on the drive ne. 5okts doesnt give you much time with the storm , so I just let them go as they passed and waited fro the next one. Not much rotation at all with these wall clouds if any. Their were no good road options to speak of, well not to keep up with 50 to 55kt storms.
Again all the sups training over were turning to crap. One or two funnels were reported in the whole state of IA (so much for the PDS). WI had quite a few decent storms produce nadors. I think the one funnel that was reported in IA was from the best looking sup of the day that went right over my head. That was the only storm that deviated a little from the rest on radar. None managed to produce as far as I know and saw.
Setup looked great, everything looked good but nothing paned out. For one I think unidirectional shear had something to do with it. And the proximity of things another, cells that close together never really do to good. Oh well, it looks like 07 is turning out to be like 06 after all!
